Jan 2019 - Any / We All Looked Up

So the book I read is called We All Looked Up and was written by Tommy Wallach. Any time i'm at Target I stop in the book section to see what they've got and for whatever reason this one caught my eye. It's a sleek black cover. Very minimal. Depicts a group of kids on the front looking up at a shooting star. Turns out, that shooting star is actually a meteor headed towards Earth. But the book isn't about the meteor. The book is a pre-apocalyptic story. The book begins with the announcement that a meteor will crash into Earth and there's nothing thuggery can do to stop it. The story actually follows a group of teenagers and how their lives change in the event of this impending doom. You get a glimpse into their pasts, their very different personalities and lifestyles, and how people from all different backgrounds react to this event. Their lives all end up intersecting in one way or another and you get to see how that dynamic evolves. It's essentially the breakfast club that ends in world annihilation.

This book has some quotes in it that for whatever reason really struck a chord with me. So much so that I wrote them down and want to share a couple...

"The best books, they don't talk things you never thought about before. They talk about things you'd always thought about, but that you didn't think anyone else had thought about. You read them, and suddenly you're a little bit less alone in the world. You're part of this cosmic community of people who've thought about this thing, whatever it happens to be."

"Do you think it is better to fail at something worthwhile, or succeed at something meaningless"

"She was miserable because she kept hoping things would change. If she could eradicate the hope, she could eradicate the sadness."

These aren't even close to all of them. Maybe not even the best ones. To make it even better, the author is also a musician and he recorded an album to accompany the book. Brilliant stuff.

Read it. That's all I have to say.
